GNUWorks

We all know about networks, the biggest and most common being the internet.  I have spent many an afternoon dreaming about what the creators of the internet would think of the network infrastructure we have in place today.

On a basic level I think they would be largely disappointed by the correlation between information and cost. We have created very capable encryption systems and very capable high speed wireless modems and data connections. With the combination of these two we should be able to bootstrap our own global multimesh networks, with one obvious caveat, oceans.

Let’s skip ahead a little. I lack some of the technological knowledge required to actually make this efficiently happen myself. I am somewhat outspoken about the fact that I am a college dropout, but this is one instance where knowledge is holding me back.

There’s a relatively simple way to do this, I’m almost sure. We could use some combination of VGA or maybe even raspberry pi’s. If you or anyone you know is interested in this project I would love to hear from you: aosmith -at- gmail -dot- com.

In case it’s not obvious from the content here, or the title, I think it’s extremely important that this technology remains open source.

Update: John McAfee has also suggested something similar.

Update: I’ve gotten a couple emails regarding FM, I know we must implement QAM for this to be even somewhat viable. I also know that this is significantly harder than FM.
